JOB TITLE: CATERING ASSISTANT
SALARY RANGE: SENDAT SUPPORT STAFF PAY SCALE SP 4-6
CONTRACT: 12.5 HOURS PER WEEK / 39 WEEKS PER YEAR
WORKING ARRANGEMENTS: Monday to Friday: 11:30 to 14:00
REPORTS TO: Head of School via Head of Kitchen
CONTEXT
The Special Educational Needs and Academies Trust (SENDAT) is a Multi Academy Trust whose provisions support a range of needs including Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Autistic
Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Social, Emotional & Mental Health and Behavioural (SEMH) needs.
Our core aim is to provide for the continuum of special needs across the Eastern region.
All SENDAT schools and alternate provisions have Trauma Informed practices embedded across the curriculum and SENDAT staff colleagues are given training and support to develop and use these skills in their day-to-day working.
All new appointments are subject to successful completion of induction and probation training as set out in the SENDAT Probationary Procedure.
MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE
To work under the direction of the Head of Kitchen to prepare food and to maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen and dining area in accordance with defined standards and quality expected.
To work at all times within the Department for Education guidelines regarding current health safety and hygiene legislation and the school’s Health and Safety Policy, with the aim of achieving high standards of customer care, good quality and best value.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Under the direction of the Head of Kitchen:
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Academy Trust (SENDAT)
1. Operate the plate wash area, ensure all cooking and serving equipment is clean and sanitised.
2. Complete jobs as required from the cleaning schedule, ensuring that the schedule is signed off once fully completed. Daily tasks include (but are not limited to) cleaning of the tables, floors, kitchen work areas and surfaces, kitchen utensils and other equipment.
3. Follow the daily prep sheet to prepare daily menu items in advance of service as required to ensure that everything is ready in good time. This includes (but is not limited to) vegetable preparation and salad bar. Undertake any other reasonable prep tasks as requested by the
Head of Kitchen.
4. Assist with operation of the servery as required.
5. Assist with receiving and handling of any deliveries to the kitchen as required. Help ensure the
HACCP paperwork is completed.
6. Assist the team in meeting all statutory requirements for Ofsted and Local Authority Hygiene inspections.
7. Participate and demonstrate in an alert and positive approach to Health and Safety in the delivery of all the operation.
8. Promote and demonstrate effective waste management within the dining room and kitchen.
9. Assist with cleaning duties within the kitchen and dining areas as required by the Head of
Kitchen and school’s Senior Leadership Team, this will include end of term deep cleaning.
10. Be prepared to cover kitchen staff absence under the direction of the Head of Kitchen.
ADMINISTRATION:
1. Keep up to date with allergies and other special dietary requirements of students and staff.
2. Assist in the implementation of the departmental Food Safety Manual, including HACCP.
3. Ensure the School’s Health & Safety Policy and all relevant Health & Safety legislation is applied effectively to all activities undertaken by members of the Catering Department.
4. Under the direction of the Head of Kitchen, maintain appropriate stock rotation in all areas.
CUSTOMER CARE:
1. Help ensure the effective promotion of the catering service, including new initiatives to encourage students to try new foods (as appropriate to their individual dietary needs), make healthy choices and enjoy mealtimes, in accordance with the school’s policies.
2. Help provide a daily meal service supplying breakfasts, snacks, midday meals, drinks and teas.

3. Help present demonstrations and food tasting sessions at Open Evenings, as required
4. Maintain constructive and effective communication and working relationships with the staff colleagues at all times, both within the catering team and more widely with other
Priory staff colleagues.
GENERAL
1. Actively contribute to and promote the overall ethos and values of the School and the wider
Trust.
2. Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
3. Maintain consistent high standards of professional conduct, tact and diplomacy at all times in dealings with students, parents, staff colleagues, external agencies and any other visitors to the school or wider Trust.
4. Maintain absolute confidentiality and exercise discretion with regard to staff / student information and the Trust’s business at all times.
5. Act as an ambassador for the School and the wider Trust within the local community and beyond, ensuring that the ethos and values of the Trust are promoted and upheld at all times.
6. Undertake any other reasonable tasks and responsibilities as requested by the Head of School or a member of the Senior Leadership or Trust Executive Leadership Teams which fall within the scope of the post
SAFEGUARDING AND SAFER RECRUITMENT
1. SENDAT is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young persons at all times. The post holder under the guidance of the Head of School, will be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all children with whom he/she comes into contact, in accordance with the Trust’s and the School’s Safeguarding policies.
2. The post holder is required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
3. The post holder is required to disclose to the school details of any Police warning, caution, bindover or conviction during relevant employment.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Attributes Essential Preferred
Education/Qualifications NVQ 2 in Catering or NVQ 3 equivalent
Food Hygiene Certificate
Experience Previous experience of cooking for Previous experience of large numbers in an industrial, cooking in a school kitchen educational or similar environment
Skills/Knowledge/ Knowledge of production of fresh Experience of menu planning
Aptitude and convenience foods using and portion control, working modern catering technology, within a strict budget including catering for special dietary requirements Ability to assist with

Knowledge of health and safety assistants and food hygiene regulations
Ability to assist with clerical tasks relevant to kitchen procedures
